HLC aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. We wish to encourage our students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners.

From Headstart Nursery School to Headstart Learning Centre

For the past 23 years, we’ve been undergoing a constant makeover, but people only referred to us as a school for the first 20 years; We too described our body of work only as the “school” for that period. We were known as an activity-oriented, child-centric, inclusive, one-of-a-kind “school” or by other similar and positive descriptors. Our purpose wasn’t being captured in these descriptions nor were our transformations; they were heart-warming nevertheless.

We have always gone about transforming society through our work with children, and not been merely preparing children for college readiness in child-centric, activity oriented, inclusive ways.

Over the past 3-4 years, however, people have begun to refer to us as a Social Incubation Centre, as an organisation that is bringing about transformative social change in every community we work. This is a better description of what we do. Our makeovers and changes are more visible and apparent now it would seem.

We too have revamped our strategy, our footprint, our work culture and our outlook to do more work for social advancement. Watch this video to understand our journey thus far.

Headstart was established as a nursery and primary school in 1995 by Mrs. Sudha Mahesh. In the 23 years since then, the institution has grown into Headstart Learning Centre – one of India’s top learning centres, offering quality education that shapes the lives of bright young children at all grade levels. We are also one of the first Ashoka Changemaker schools in the country.


HLC’s work is guided by a few key principles:

  • Child-centric education: Children learn in many different ways – by seeing, by listening and by doing. The teaching methods used in the school take advantage of this breadth. We have created a child-centric program that is focused on the individual learning needs of each child, giving every one of them the opportunity to learn in a manner that is best suited to them.
  • Working closely with parents: Children learn better when the environment of learning at the school is aligned with that at home. At HLC, the parents of the students are invited to interact with the teachers as well as to participate actively in the school’s affairs to bring about unison in what they seek for their children and what HLC offers.
  • Respect for diversity: HLC is an integrating and inclusive school. Children at HLC come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, and we work hard to cherish and support each of them.
  • Transparency: Above all, HLC believes in transparency. We share with the parents detailed information on how the school runs, the new techniques and ideas we are working on, the likely benefits of our efforts, and much more. We believe that we are in a research-led environment, and we therefore embrace a culture of open-ness that fosters learning for all – not only the children, but also teachers, administrators and parents.
